FILM/TALK: Photography A Visual Language: The Portrait Document Part 2

This short film is part of a conversation featuring photographers Harry Borden, Chris Floyd, Jenny Lewis and Laura Hynd hosted by Dr.Sharon Harper. In this film they discuss the importance of personal work to their creative practices and the inspirations for that work, their relationships with the commissioning process and with the creation of portrait based imagery.

Harry Borden’s work has been widely published.  He has won prizes at the World Press Photo awards in 1997 and 1999 and was a judge of the contest in 2010 and 2011.  In June 2005 he was awarded a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Harry Borden: On Business that brought together thirty portraits of leading business leaders. The NPG now have more than 100 examples of Harry’s work in their permanent collection.  His on-going personal projects include a series on lone fathers, Single Parent Dads and Holocaust Survivors, which was shortlisted for the European Publishers Award for Photography and will be released in 2017 by Octopus.  In 2014 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society. www.harryborden.co.uk

Chris Floyd’s work has appeared in some of the world’s most highly respected publications, including The New Yorker, Harpers Bazaar, GQ, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, The Sunday Times Magazine, and Wallpaper*.  He has shot advertising campaigns for British Airways, Toyota and Philips and has been selected several times for the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and the annual publication, American Photography. In 2011 Chris published a project titled ‘One Hundred And Forty Characters’. Over a period of a year he made contact with 140 people that he followed on Twitter and photographed each of them in his London studio. The project received worldwide recognition and acclaim, with features about it on the BBC, Newsweek, The Guardian, Sunday Times, Elle, Esquire and many other publications and websites. www.chrisfloyd.com

Jenny Lewis grew up in Little Clacton, Essex and moved to Hackney almost 20 years ago. Since then she has made her living as an editorial photographer, but continues to pursue a range of personal work in her spare time. Much of this centres on her experience of living and working in East London. Alongside One Day Young, which pictures Hackney-born babies during the first 24 hours of life, she has also begun photographing the extraordinary network of creatives who live alongside her in the borough. These sculptors, milliners, hula hoop performers, artists, potters and designers are pictured at a critical moment in Hackney’s history, as rising prices and redevelopment forces many of them to seek studio-space elsewhere. www.jennylewis.net

Laura Hynd exhibits internationally and has been commissioned by publications including The New York Times: T2, Telegraph Magazine, Wall Street Journal and the FT Magazine. Laura lectures at several universities and will be hosting her own workshop titled The Letting Go, Finding Your Within, in Cyprus, June 2016. www.laurahynd.com

Dr Sharon Harper is Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Art & Photography at the University of Gloucestershire. In the past, year she has given papers at Generations (MeCCSA 2015: Northumbria) and 21st Century Photography (Central St. Martin’s), and at Ashoka University (Delhi) calling for greater theoretical engagement with commissioned photography. Recent articles include The Commercial Elephant in the Room published in Take on Art and The World’s Most Amazing 100% Awesome Photography Theory currently under review. She will be presenting a new paper on industry structure and digitalization at Helsinki Photomedia in March 2016.
