PODCAST: A Photographic Life, Episode 117: Plus Photographer Jan Töve

In episode 117 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the Japanese concept of ‘ikigai’, blended teaching of photography, maintaining mental wellbeing and the importance of photography in troubled times.

Plus this week photographer Jan Töve takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’

Jan Töve was born in 1958 and is a photographer and author based in Hökerum, West Sweden who started taking photographs in his early teens and, after completing his compulsory schooling, was apprenticed to a portrait photographer. In 1982, he enrolled at the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts to train as a film cameraman, but he dropped out in favour of a teacher training qualification, graduating in 1986. Jan has worked as a full-time photographer and author since 1994. In 1995 he was named Nordic Photographer of the Year by the Swedish photography magazine Foto and in 2003 he was named Nature Photographer of the Year, by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. He has published numerous books including Reflections in 1996, Riverside in 2007, Silent Landscape in 2012, Faraway Nearby in 2017, and Night Light in 2020. Jan has received numerous awards and exhibited in galleries and museums in Sweden and internationally, most recently in the Contemporary Landscapes exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Modern Art in San Diego. www.jantove.com

Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). His book New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019.
