Plus this week photographer Oli Scarff takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’
Oli Scarff works for Agence France-Presse (AFP) and is based near Manchester, UK covering news, sports and features across the North of England. Following four years studying mathematics at Warwick University, Scarff began his photography career with the SWNS (South West News Services) agency in Bristol, England, shooting pictures for national newspapers and magazines. After three years he accepted a contract with the Daily Telegraph newspaper in London, a year later he joined Getty Images as one of their six UK staff news photographers. Working for Getty from 2008 – 2014 he covered international assignments in: Kenya, Italy, France, Greece, America, Switzerland, Brazil, South Africa and Turkey. Looking for a new challenge, he moved out of London in late 2014 to begin working for AFP. Scarff’s images have appeared in publications around the world including: The New York Times, Sydney Morning Herald, LA Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Time and Newsweek. He has won numerous awards including in 2018 – First Prize ‘Sports – Singles’ award at the World Press Photo awards, First Prize: Live News in The Press Photographer’s Year, 2013, British Press Awards – Photographer of the Year and Getty Images European News Photographer of the Year in 2011. www.oliscarff.com

Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015). His book New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2019.
